Plastic Unfantastic, small changes, big impact (part 3, skin and hair care)
Well it’s been a while since my Plastic Unfantastic Blogs One and Two were posted and I’ve been busy making other changes around the house. As before none of these are particularly challenging changes so I hope that everyone will be able to spot something they can switch pretty easily.
I also think it's worth saying that yes, I know these changes on their own won’t undo all the damage we’ve done to the eco-system but everything we do going forward does help reduce further impact and it shows that we as consumers want these kinds of products. It’s also a great opportunity to reevaluate the things we regularly spend our money on, what’s actually in them, where is our money going, what impact are they having, do I really need them and what are my options. For these and other reasons, I’ve found this a really positive experience to go through.
Right, enough intro, on to today’s unplastic and actually fantastic products!
Deodorant
ZWP (Zero Waste Path) - Grapefruit and Lemongrass or Lavendar and Tea Tree
Reasons it’s fantastic:
Made in Cambridge, UK (so low mileage for me), 100% Vegan, Cruelty Free, Zero Waste, Palm Oil Free, Compostable Packaging, Don’t ship internationally to reduce air mileage, share information on their full supply chain.
This has been a great switch, not only does it tick a lot of the boxes I’m looking for these days in my purchases but it smells great! I’ve used this for almost a year now and thoroughly recommend it. It feels nice going on, fits in your handbag much better than a spray and it works really well. They even offer a return scheme where you get 50p for each tin returned!
Moisturising Balm
Scence Natural Skin Care - Rich Mango with Sweet Organge and Bergamot Essential Oils
Reasons it’s fantastic:
Made in Cornwall, UK (so low mileage for me), 100% Vegan, Cruetly Free, Organic (where certification is possible), Plastic Free, Palm Oil Free, Paraben free, Compostable Packaging, all their suppliers are UK based.
GORGEOUS! They have a lot of different products and even in their moisturiser range alone there are eight different versions available. The one I’ve stuck with so far is the Summer Citrus one and honestly I’m not sure what’s better, the scent or the yummy feeling when it melts into your skin. My skin feels so good with this, I loved the packaging and even bought the Cool Rose version as a gift for a friend. The only thing I would say, and this comes from someone who has never been one for spending much on toiletries, is that at £12 for a tube I felt I went through it relatively quickly but then again I think that’s partly because I loved it so much so might be more my fault than anything else!
Shampoo Bar
ZWP (Zero Waste Path) - Rosemary and Mint, Aloe, Coconut Milk or Lavendar
Reasons it’s fantastic:
Made in Cambridge, UK (so low mileage for me), 100% Vegan, Cruelty Free, Zero Waste, Palm Oil Free, Compostable Packaging, Don’t ship internationally to reduce air mileage, share information on their full supply chain.
Another great recommendation for a ZWP product. Full disclosure, because I’ve been given leftover bottles of shampoo (my folks are hosts to overseas students and they often leave bottles behind) I haven’t consistantly used this for a long period of time. When I have used it though it’s been great. It smells fantastic (I’ve realised writing this that I’m so much more into the smells of my products than I realised!) and it works well on my hair. My hair can get quite dry so I selected the Rosemary and Mint one to try but I fancy giving the Coconut Milk one a go too …you know, because of the smell!!
Oh and for dog owners, they also do a doggy shampoo bar too! So your pooch can be plastic free too!!
Beauty Balm
Living Naturally - Chamomile and Rose Beauty Balm
Reasons it’s fantastic:
Made in the UK (so low mileage for me), 100% Vegan, Cruelty Free, Organic (90*), Plastic Free, Ethical Ingredients, Palm Oil Free, SLS Free, Biodegradable, Sutstainable, Hypoallergenic, The Green Parent Natural Beauty Award Winner for Best Buy.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this. Feels great going on but also has made a real difference to how I feel about my face skin too. I’ve consiously tried to cut back on wearing make up for a few different reasons. I still do sometimes but more often than not I’m rocking a natural face these days and this balm has helped with that. My face feels great and I’d definitly recommend it, in fact I’ve bought it as a gift for a couple of people already.
It can be used for hands, face, feet or body but I’ve really stuck with it for my face, it’s a small £10 jar and did I mention I don’t spend a lot on these things? :)
Hope you've enjoyed reading about these products and would love to hear your recommendations for ones to try!
More easy plastic free changes I’ve been making, this time it’s all about skin and hair care.
